Michael James Roberts

Michael James Roberts’ story began on August 24, 2004 in Bay City, Michigan.  Within two months of his birth, he was adopted by the Roberts, moved to southern California, and immediately fit in although he couldn't even speak yet!  This was an innate ability he would carry with him for the rest of his life earning him the moniker of “the Mayor.”  He was a young man of integrity, intelligence, compassion, fun, and, a zest for life.  He possessed a beautiful and very gentle soul and was quick to provide a hug and a smile.

Michael was always there for everyone whether to lend advice to someone in need or to be the protector.   For those of us who knew him we will never be the same.  Michael had his hardships along the way as we all do (bad tonsillectomy when he was five, skull fracture, epilepsy, a seizure while swimming in the ocean and more) but it’s how he chose to deal with those that set him apart from the rest of us. With a big Michael smile.

A story that really conveys who he was occurred during one of his youth basketball games. While playing basketball at the Rec Center in Laguna Hills, CA, Michael revealed one of his finest qualities, compassion.

One of the players from the opposing team had taken a shot and missed. Michael, being one of the bigger kids, grabbed the ball with both hands, held it high over his head just as he was coached to do, and pivoted to throw a perfect outlet pass to his teammate. The fastbreak had begun.  However, while turning to make the pass he inadvertently knocked over one of the opposing players and he knew it.

Michael took two steps in the direction of his team's basket when he stopped immediately, turned around and leaned back to extend his hand to help the player up that he had just knocked to the floor.

That was so Michael. He was always willing to offer a helping hand, even if it meant it might be to his disadvantage to do so.  Michael James Roberts had compassion and was always willing to help others without question.

He was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 9.  While the exact cause was never definitely determined, it was most likely the result of a traumatic brain injury he suffered in a freak accident while playing tennis.  He spent the rest of his life on medication which seemed to keep the condition mostly under control - until it didn't.

Michael passed away on May 28th, 2023 less than five days after his high school graduation in which he was very proud of what he had accomplished, excited for what the future had in store, and with the rest of his life in front of him.  He returned home early afternoon that fateful Sunday after being with friends and complained of a severe headache.   While migraine headaches were not common for Michael, on the infrequent occasion they presented, he would fall asleep for some period of time and they would subside.  However, on this day, less than three hours after returning home he passed away in his bed from what doctors have referred to as SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death from Epilepsy).

Michael was always generous, constantly giving to others to make them happy and feel more included. He even gave away toys at the neighborhood pool to ensure everyone felt involved. Michael loved giving his time, affection, and belongings to others. We believe Michael would be thrilled with the mission and work of the foundation named in his honor. Mike Rules!
